Abalone, belonging to a gasteropod mollusk family is highly valued for its meat. The mollusk resembles the human ear due to its form and using a bit of imagination. For this reason it is also called sea ear.
On the outside it has a rough texture whereas on the inside it has a wide range of colours as well as small marks. In its natural environment it feeds on seaweed, far from star fish and crabs, its natural predators.
It only has one shell and is stuck to sea rocks.

GOURMET DELICACY

Abalone is one of the most expensive seafoods in the world and is considered a sea delicacy in the Asian markets. Japan and China are the main world consumers of this product. One kilo of abalone costs more than 100 Euros in these markets.

This mollusk feeds on seaweeds. It can be bought dry, fresh, tinned, salted or frozen. It should be slowly cooked at a low temperature. Prolonged cooking increases its taste although sun-dried abalone is the tastiest option. This is a common Asian preparation and the most valued and expensive of all.

In the entire world, gourmet gastronomy is including abalone in menus as one of the most exclusive proposals.
